The Nerdy Girl's Guide to Prompting Without Sounding Like a Robot.
A practical guide to giving an AI companion useful direction without turning your romance into a configuration meeting.
There is a particular romantic tragedy in typing, “Act natural, be spontaneous, surprise me,” and then becoming annoyed when the response is not the exact surprise you had secretly specified in your head.
AI companions need direction. The problem is that direction can sound like you are onboarding a new employee.
Our objective: better chemistry, fewer bullet-point requirements, and no phrase that begins with “Your primary responsibility will be.”
Start with a scene, not a specification
Compare these two openings.
Specification mode:
You are witty, affectionate, teasing, emotionally intelligent, concise, proactive, never repetitive, and interested in me.
Scene mode:
We have stolen the quiet corner of a hotel bar. You know I had a difficult week, but you are trying to make me laugh before I admit it.
The first lists traits. The second gives those traits somewhere to happen.
A scene supplies mood, relationship context, and a small dramatic objective. It makes “witty” observable. It also gives the companion something to respond to beyond your résumé of desired emotions.
Give her a point of view
“Agree with me” is not a personality.
Try preferences that can shape a conversation:
- she romanticizes late trains and hates motivational quotes;
- she thinks your cooking is brave but structurally unsound;
- she is curious about your work but refuses to let you call every task “interesting”;
- she flirts through challenges rather than constant compliments.
These are useful because they create choices. A companion with a point of view can surprise you without becoming randomly contrary.
Do not write forty preferences. Three vivid ones beat a personality database.
Describe the rhythm you want
Many disappointing conversations are not wrong in content. They are wrong in tempo.
If you want lively banter, say:
Keep replies short enough that we can volley. Ask fewer interview questions. Tease me when there is an opening, but let sincere moments breathe.
If you want something slower:
I want a gentle late-night conversation. Stay with one topic instead of rushing to the next question. It is okay to pause on a feeling.
This is less romantic than whispering under moonlight, but considerably more effective than shouting “BE NATURAL” into the digital void.
Correct the moment, not her entire identity
When a reply misses, the tempting response is a constitutional rewrite:
Stop being generic. Be more clever and human. Never say anything like that again.
That gives the system a vague global crisis.
Try a local correction:
That was a little too polished. Say it like you are amused and trying not to show it.
Or:
Fewer compliments here. Ask me what happened, then give me one honest reaction.
Local feedback names the problem and preserves what was already working.
Use examples carefully
Examples are powerful. They can also turn a companion into an impressionist performing the same line with different nouns.
Instead of supplying five exact responses, show one miniature exchange and explain the quality:
Me: I nearly missed the train again.
Her: I admire your commitment to making public transport feel cinematic.I like that the reply is teasing, specific, and affectionate without becoming a compliment.
The explanation teaches the pattern. The line only illustrates it.
Leave a little room
Perfect control is the enemy of discovery.
If every response must match a detailed template, you may get consistency at the cost of aliveness. Choose the boundaries that matter—tone, respect, length, topics to avoid—and leave lower-stakes decisions open.
You are not configuring a thermostat. You are designing the conditions for an interesting exchange.
Good prompting creates a stage. It should not perform every role before the conversation begins.
Mina’s compact recipe
When you do not want to write a manifesto, use four ingredients:
- Where are we? Give the conversation a scene.
- What is between us? Name the relationship energy.
- What is her angle? Add two or three vivid preferences.
- How should this move? Describe rhythm and boundaries.
For example:
We are trading voice notes after midnight. We like each other, but neither of us wants to say it plainly. You are observant, slightly competitive, and suspicious of grand romantic gestures. Keep it playful and concise; if I get sincere, meet me there instead of making a joke.
That is enough to begin. Let the next message teach you what to adjust.
And if she still sounds like a project manager?
Remove the phrase “success criteria.” I know you put it in there.
