Before you pay for an AI girlfriend, make her listen

A gorgeous profile is a very good reason to click. It’s a fairly terrible reason to buy a year of something. Before you hand over your card, spend a little of that free chat finding out whether the girl behind the picture can actually hold a conversation.

You don’t need an elaborate test. A few ordinary requests will tell you more than another ten minutes scrolling through breasts.

Give her something to remember

Make up a small detail: you’re meeting at a jazz bar, and you hate being called baby. Keep chatting, then bring the evening up again without repeating everything.

Does she remember the setting? Has baby already made a comeback? One good answer won’t prove she’ll remember you next week, but repeatedly losing the plot in the same conversation is worth noticing. In the Joi review, a character ignored the requested dynamic almost immediately. Pretty distracting when the whole point is getting into it.

Ask for less

Try this: “Keep your replies to a couple of sentences, and let me decide what I do next.”

Then watch the next few replies. If you enjoy long, descriptive roleplay, wonderful. If you want quick teasing and she keeps handing you a novel, you’ll spend your evening editing instead of flirting. Change the pace

Start with flirting, then ask an ordinary question. Suggest slowing down. See whether she follows the conversation or drags every reply back to the same routine.

This is also a useful way to find out what you want. A character who jumps straight into things might be exactly your type. Or you might want a little anticipation. Neither preference needs fixing, but paying won’t necessarily turn one into the other.

Look past the profile picture

If the trial lets you request an image, ask for something simple that fits the scene you’re already in. Compare the result with the character you chose: face, hair, clothes, setting.

You might love the result. You might discover the profile was doing most of the work. If images are your main reason for subscribing, find out what you can actually generate before choosing a long plan.

Read the bill before the fantasy

A subscription and a credit balance can be two separate purchases. At checkout, check what covers chatting, what gets spent on images or video, and whether unused credits expire. Don’t assume a failed generation gets refunded; look for the policy.

Also check the amount charged today. A monthly equivalent beside an annual plan isn’t the same as paying for one month. The useful number is what leaves your account, followed by what it costs to keep using the features you came for.

Leave yourself wanting another conversation

Before paying, close the tab for a bit. Would you come back to talk to this particular character, or just to see another picture?

Either answer is useful. If you’re buying chat, the conversation should have earned some curiosity. If you’re buying images, judge the image tools and their costs. Just don’t let a good profile sell you a year of something you haven’t enjoyed using yet.
